Business reporting over hybrid model

Business planning is definitely a key prerequisite for achieving business success. Regular business planning serves as a control mechanism and improvement of work results, but it also helps in predicting possible consequences from business decisions, discovering strategic areas and self-assessment in comparison to competition. Moreover, it is very important to recognise possible mistakes in the financial plan because every single business decision, whether it is right or wrong, is deeply integrated in close and further future of business. Also, very important is quality monitoring of the realization of the plan and discovering possible deviations from plan and then analysing why they occurred.

In todays’ world of significant expansion of big companies and fast and continuous spreading of business, companies must be prepared to manage the effects of their businesses. Here, primarily in focus, is combination of managing methodologies, key metrics and IT applications which enable the employees to define information they need, to control them and, at the end, to optimise results in order to accomplish organisations and their own goals.

For the needs of advanced reporting COMBIS votes for hybrid model which combines different data sources (in this case Data Warehouse and Hyperion Planning (Essbase) cube and central reporting repository (OBIEE). Main characteristics of this model imply enabled unification of data from different sources in one unified report.

Why the need for hybrid reporting?

Users of various systems and applications within business organisation use a whole set of reports regarding certain system or applications. In that way, we come to the situation where to one set of information we have to approach through one set of reports, for example overview of achievements which are located in Data Warehouse, while to the plan values and different “what-if” analysis, which are located in a completely different system, we approach through a whole different set of reports.

Additional challenge are those situations where user cannot connect all that information into one report, that is, to bring data from different sources and systems into correlation, or create “point of view” that he needs. These situations introduce Excel or similar tools, and new reports are then created using the “copy/paste” methods, which inevitably bring to the absence of advanced possibilities that reporting tools have and to the spending of huge amounts of time.

With the use of hybrid model as a tool for visualisation we come to the possibility of creating reports with the insight in data according to the chosen criteria, regardless of their source, whereby it is possible to easily compare data from different systems, without to need of take account of the system they come from. For example, reports can show companies’ achievements on the lowest levels (natively located in Data Warehouse), together with plan data on higher levels and different “what-if” analysis. These kind of reports extremely easy compare data from different systems, so the user does not have to even know from which system data comes.

Nevertheless, during the creation of the report in hybrid model we do not burden either system with data that do not belong there natively, we do not store Data Warehouse with the data from Oracle Hyperion Planning (Essbase) cube, or vice versa. In other words, we do not spend resources for modification of the existing systems, and in the same time, we are keeping performances of every system on very high level, which results in lesser time for generating these kind of reports.

Hybrid model definitely provides optimum of business reporting and planning as a prerequisite for exploring business possibilities and achieving one business success after another.
