Microsoft System Center 2012

Cost cutting, economization, improving operational efficiency and quality of service – these are some of the targets of IT organizations. The new versions of the Microsoft System Center tools will bring significant technology improvements that make target achievement possible. With the new version of the Microsoft System Center tools and the possibility of mutual integration (among other things, by utilization of the Orchestrator), implementation of the System Center tool will meet almost all needs from the area of advanced IT infrastructure and service management (ITSM). The above mentioned tools, combined with Microsoft's virtualization technologies, most notably the Hyper-V 3.0 platform, are the ideal solution for Private Cloud. Emphasis should certainly be put on the direct savings potential that may be realized by replacement of 3rd party solutions, such as replacement of the anti-virus solution, backup solution and the like.

The tools are:

  • Operations Manager - SCOM: in the new version, surveillance of infrastructure and services includes network monitoring and application performance monitoring – a complete SLA Management platform.
  • Configuration Manager - SCCM: management of primarily client and server environment configuration, a solution for distributed application implementation and update by new versions, software and hardware inventory, implementation and upgrade of computer operating systems, power management, remote connection etc.
  • Virtual Machine Manager - SCVMM: the new version of VMM will substantially simplify the construction and maintenance of Private Cloud solutions.
  • Data Protection Manager - SCDPM: improved support for the backup virtualization environment and other resources implemented on Microsoft technologies.
  • Service Manager – SCSM: a tool for construction of an ITSM platform, for all recommendations defined in this area, for instance, by ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library). Service Desk solutions with functionalities of incident and issue management, customer request management etc.
  • Orchestrator – SCORCH: Together with the new version of the Service Manager, this is the biggest enhancement in the context of System Center tools integration and integration into the user's IT environment. This tool will provide automation of administration (and similar) activities on the system.
  • Forefront Endpoint Protection – SCFEP: in this version, Microsoft's anti-virus solution is fully integrated into SCCM.
  • App Controller: application environment management tool.

The COMBIS Microsoft team is intensively engaged in implementing all these tools. In the upcoming period, special emphasis will be placed on developing management solutions based on Service Manager. Some of these solutions have already been tested in pilot projects with our users:

  • Automated creation of user accounts and granting of access rights (required information is entered via  Self-Service portal – Service Manager, and the Orchestrator creates a user account in AD (Active Directory), creates a mailbox, creates a user account for business system access, adds the user to security group, and all this without the need for system administrator intervention),
  • Solution for incident and user request management,
  • Automated implementation of security and critical patches on server infrastructure.

Ever since release candidate versions, the majority of System Center tools have been implemented in the COMBIS’ infrastructure production environment, which makes it possible for the Microsoft team members to acquire relevant know-how even in the early stages of development of new technologies.

The COMBIS team has been awarded the Microsoft GOLD Partner status for System Management and Virtualization competency.
